Building Alignment, Momentum, and a Clear Path Forward for 2026
Last weekend, the APA leadership gathered in person for a highly productive strategic planning and board meeting focused on strengthening the future of polocrosse across the United States. The weekend was marked by thoughtful discussion, collaboration across committees, and a shared commitment to supporting riders, families, clubs, and horses.
One of the most important outcomes of the meeting was alignment. Leadership came together around a clear, strategic growth plan for 2026 that touches every major area of the Association—from membership and player development to communications, technology, safety, and long-term sustainability. Rather than operating in silos, the Board affirmed the importance of coordinated efforts and shared ownership of APA’s priorities.
Strengthening Leadership and Structure
The Board confirmed key officer and committee chair roles to ensure clarity, continuity, and accountability moving into 2026. This step allows volunteers to focus their energy effectively and ensures members know who to turn to for support, guidance, and information. Several additional roles were intentionally tabled to allow for further outreach and thoughtful decisions at upcoming meetings.
Immediate Focus on Member Experience
A major theme throughout the weekend was improving the member experience, particularly for new players and families. Leadership agreed to immediately address known challenges with website navigation and the process of joining or renewing APA membership. These fixes are already underway, with the goal of making APA’s digital experience clearer, more welcoming, and easier to use.
In addition, the Board renewed its focus on onboarding and education, recognizing that clear pathways are essential for growth. This includes helping new members understand how to get started, learn the game, participate safely, and connect with local clubs and programs.
Coordinated Growth Through Collaboration
To support this work, leadership aligned on forming a cross-functional marketing and growth task force that brings together the APA Secretary, Communications Chair, Player Development Chair, Technology Chair, and Membership Development Chair. This group will ensure that messaging, systems, education, and outreach are aligned and working together to support sustainable growth.
Safety, Fairness, and Horse Welfare at the Center
Safety and horse welfare remained central to all discussions. The Board approved an update to the Standards of Play establishing a new Safety Line to better protect horses, players, and spectators, reinforcing APA’s commitment to fairness, consistency, and responsible play. The Chief Umpire role was reaffirmed, underscoring the importance of clear standards and consistent officiating.
Thoughtful Financial and Long-Term Planning
Leadership reviewed and approved the 2026 budget with careful attention to transparency, conservative planning, and alignment with strategic priorities. The Board also engaged in forward-looking discussions about Nationals timing, balancing member experience, volunteer capacity, sponsorship considerations, and long-term organizational health.
Looking Ahead
The weekend was not about solving everything at once—it was about setting direction, clarifying priorities, and committing to work together in a more intentional way. Clear next steps were identified, and outstanding items were documented to ensure continued progress at upcoming board meetings.
Above all, the meeting reflected the strength of the APA community: passionate volunteers, respectful dialogue, and a shared belief in polocrosse as a welcoming, team-oriented, family-friendly sport built on skill, safety, and belonging.
APA leadership left the weekend aligned, energized, and excited about the road ahead—and we look forward to sharing updates as this work continues throughout 2026.
