More Than a Tournament: A True International Experience

Over three fast-paced, high-intensity matches, the Barbarian team delivered a standout performance, finishing the series undefeated:

• Match 1: 23–16
• Match 2: 19–13
• Match 3: 25–14

While the results reflected the Barbarians’ cohesion and adaptability, the level of play on both sides showcased the strength and growth of international polocrosse. What set this event apart wasn’t just the competition—it was the experience.

Players from both teams arrived earlier in the week, beginning Tuesday, living together, sharing meals, and building genuine friendships. By the time the first match began, these weren’t just opposing teams—they were a connected international group brought together by a shared passion.

The Barbarian team, by design, represented multiple countries rather than a single nation. This approach emphasizes one of the most important values of polocrosse: connection across borders.

Both teams highlighted how important these opportunities are—not just for developing players, but for strengthening the global polocrosse community and creating lifelong relationships.

Leadership, Teamwork, and Behind-the-Scenes Excellence

A major contributor to the weekend’s success was the outstanding management and coordination behind the scenes.

The Barbarian team was managed by USA players Katie Ryan and Katherine Erickson, who seamlessly stepped into leadership roles and became an integral part of the team. Their energy, organization, and ability to create a fun, supportive environment were widely praised by players.

By utilizing U.S.-based managers instead of bringing in international staff, the team was also able to reduce costs—demonstrating a practical and effective model for future tours.

Team USA was led by manager Jenna Goveronski, who played a critical role in organizing the event alongside Katie and Kat. From logistics and scheduling to meals and overall coordination, their combined efforts ensured the entire weekend ran smoothly for both domestic and international participants.

Players consistently commented on the welcoming atmosphere, well-organized setup, and the sense of community that made the event so enjoyable.

Exceptional Horse Pool and Commitment to Welfare

One of the standout successes of the weekend was the quality and generosity behind the horse pool—a true testament to the dedication of the U.S. polocrosse community.

Coach Debbie Harris praised the horses provided, noting that every mount in the pool was one the Barbarian players were eager and confident to ride. This depth allowed players to compete at a high level and contributed significantly to the quality of play throughout the series.

While the pool was strong and well-received, having additional horses would have further enhanced the experience by reducing the number of chukkas each horse needed to play. That said, the majority of the horses were fit, well-prepared, and eager to perform—highlighting the care and commitment of their owners.

The horse pool was made possible by APA members who willingly and generously provided their horses for international competition. Their contributions are what allow events like this to take place and succeed.

With such a strong horse welfare team and level of organization, the event demonstrated how effectively horses can be managed and cared for at a high level. It is our hope that, building on this success, even more members will consider contributing horses to future pools—providing their mounts with valuable experience while continuing to elevate the standard of international competition.

A particularly meaningful aspect was the involvement of junior members in horse coordination roles. This initiative, part of the Player Development Program, gave younger participants firsthand experience in the operational side of international competition—helping develop future leaders and well-rounded contributors to the sport.
